Grid-Tied Solar Electric systems work by feeding the unused power they produce back into the utility grid.  When a system produces more power then is being consumed it will literally spin the electric meter backward. This is known as "net-metering".  At night, you then draw power from the utility company.  A some cases a solar electric system can offset much of, if not all of your electric bill.
